In addition to the eBay super power sellers, there are several levels of other sellers. It’s among these mid and lower level sellers where my sales technique works best. In fact, my sales technique actually works better for the new, smallest seller. The reason I make that statement is again based on my own experience. . . not on what somebody else has told me or that I read in another report or article online.
When you first begin as an eBay seller, you have several choices on how and what to sell. Many beginners start out selling used items they find at home or at garage sales. That’s ok, but you’ll find thousands of other new and old sellers doing the same thing in competition to you. The same is true of new sellers who hook up with drop ship wholesalers, which is the topic for a separate article. In this scenario, you will again find thousands on eBay selling the same merchandise and making such a small profit that they usually don’t last long. There is one exception to this type of selling though; if you put $10,000-$20,000 into merchandise bought at very low closeout prices and devote full time to this technique, you can actually make a good living. But in this article, I’m addressing those people who don’t have or want to jump into eBay at that level of investment in money and time. So now, read on for what works for me and can for you, too.
The secret to my success as an eBay seller has always been to find a way to offer different merchandise than all the rest. I’ve made that possible by producing my own products (handmade leather goods, jewelry and fine art paintings), but maybe that’s not possible for you; it wasn’t for one of my kids. So I then researched the possibility of customizing and/or modifying popular products already being sold on eBay. This led to offering free engraving on various items such as, pendants, bracelets, charms, belt buckles and other similar merchandise. In order to be able to offer free engraving, I bought a tabletop engraving machine. Engraving machines will cost anywhere from $500 used to several thousand new either manually operated or computer controlled. The time I spend on engraving is minimal, but the difference it makes in sales is well worth it. You can do this with little or no skill!
So for a few hundred dollars invested in equipment, you can be a “specialized” eBay seller that will set you apart from your competitors. The additional plus is that with your engraving capability you may find yourself doing the same work in your local area for even more profit margin!
